15 Essential Tips for First Time Cruisers: What to Know Before You Sail

Booking your first cruise is one of those travel moments that feels both thrilling and slightly daunting. You’ve seen the photos of ocean sunsets, endless buffets and sparkling pools. But you may also be wondering how it all actually works once you’re on board.

Before my first cruise, I spent hours researching what to expect. Even then, there were things I didn’t fully appreciate until I was standing on deck with my suitcase still somewhere below. Since then, I’ve helped lots of clients plan their first cruise and learned a few insider secrets along the way.

Here are my 15 best tips for anyone about to set sail for the first time.

1. Pack a day bag with everything you’ll want straight away

You hand your suitcase over at the port, but it can take several hours before it’s delivered to your cabin. I always keep a small backpack with the essentials: swimwear, sun lotion, sunglasses, medication, a change of clothes and a phone charger. That way, I can jump straight into holiday mode while others are waiting for luggage. It’s also worth popping a refillable water bottle and a small toiletry kit in there too. You’ll feel far more relaxed knowing you’ve got what you need.

2. Arrive the day before you sail

Flights get delayed. Luggage gets lost. Traffic happens. If you arrive the day before your cruise, you remove every ounce of that stress. I always stay near the port so I can explore the area, enjoy a calm dinner and board refreshed the next morning. It costs a little extra, but it’s the best investment for your peace of mind. You start the trip well rested instead of exhausted from a 4 a.m. airport dash.

3. Download the cruise line’s app before you travel

Most cruise lines now use their own apps for everything from checking in to booking restaurants and excursions. Download it at home when you’ve got good Wi-Fi and log in to familiarise yourself with it. Once onboard, switch your phone to airplane mode and use the ship’s Wi-Fi or the offline features in the app. It’s a simple step that saves you from roaming charges and keeps you connected to daily activities, dining times and your onboard account.

4. Choose your cabin with care

Where you sleep makes a big difference to your cruise experience. I always recommend midship cabins on lower decks for first-timers as they feel the most stable. If you’re worried about motion, this helps reduce that gentle sway you might feel further forward or aft. I also avoid cabins near lifts or late-night venues. A quiet spot means restful nights, especially after long days exploring or enjoying the ship’s shows. If you can, a balcony cabin adds an extra sense of space. It’s also a private spot for morning coffee with sea views.

5. Unpack and settle in fully

Cruise cabins are cleverly designed but still compact. The biggest mistake I made on my first cruise was living out of my suitcase. Now, I unpack as soon as I arrive. Hanging clothes, using drawers and storing my suitcase under the bed instantly makes the space feel bigger. I also bring a small laundry bag and some folding storage cubes to stay organised. It saves time when dressing for dinner and stops your cabin from feeling cluttered. A few minutes of organisation at the start makes the whole week smoother.

6. Keep an eye on “ship time”

Cruise ships often stay on their own time zone, even when you sail through different ones. Your phone might automatically change when you reach a new port, but the ship won’t. I’ve seen passengers panic when they realise their watch doesn’t match the clock on board. Set your devices manually to ship time and stick to that. Every itinerary runs like clockwork, so this small habit helps you avoid the nightmare of missing departure.

7. Try something new every day

Cruises are packed with activities, from morning yoga to live music, wine tastings and destination talks. On my first cruise I was nervous about joining in, but once I did, I met so many lovely people and discovered things I’d never have tried at home. Make a deal with yourself to do one new thing each day. It could be a trivia quiz, dance class or learning how to make the perfect margarita. The atmosphere on board is always friendly and relaxed, so you’ll never feel out of place.

8. Explore the ship early

The first afternoon on board can feel a little overwhelming. There are multiple decks, lounges and hidden areas that you might miss if you don’t take time to explore. I always spend an hour walking around on day one. It helps me get my bearings, discover quieter spots and work out where I’ll want to spend time later in the cruise. You’ll find tucked-away coffee bars, observation lounges and secret sun decks that the crowds don’t always reach.

9. Plan your shore days but leave space for surprises

Excursions can be the highlight of a cruise, but don’t feel you have to fill every moment. I love booking one or two key experiences and then leaving a day free to wander, explore local cafés or find hidden beaches. Do your research before you sail, but also stay flexible. Sometimes the best moments happen when you follow your curiosity instead of a schedule.

10. Bring a few little cabin comforts

A few small touches can make your cabin feel homely. I always bring magnetic hooks for hanging bags or hats, a fold-up laundry hamper and a small night light for those late-night bathroom trips. If you’re travelling with family, a pack of playing cards or a mini speaker for soft background music makes evenings in the cabin more enjoyable. These little extras don’t take up much room but add real comfort.

11. Eat adventurously

Cruises are a food lover’s dream. There’s no reason to eat the same thing twice. The menus often include regional dishes inspired by the destinations you visit, so be brave and try them. I like to skip the main buffet now and then and explore smaller cafés or grab a table by the pool. You can also ask waiters what they recommend. The crew often know which dishes are guest favourites that night.

12. Use embarkation day to your advantage

When everyone else is settling in, you can get ahead. The first day is often the quietest time to book speciality restaurants, spa appointments or excursions at the onboard desk. You can also enjoy popular spaces like the pool before the ship fills up. I’ve even had entire whirlpools to myself while everyone else was still unpacking. It’s the perfect start to your trip.

13. Carry a few essentials when you go ashore

When you step off the ship, always carry a small bag with a copy of your passport, ship card, water, sun cream and some cash in local currency. I also take a note of the ship’s contact number in case of emergencies. You don’t need to pack half your cabin, just the things that keep you comfortable and safe. It’s all about being prepared without feeling weighed down.

14. Give yourself permission to rest

It’s tempting to do everything, but part of cruising’s charm is slowing down. I always plan one or two lazy sea days where I do very little beyond reading, napping and watching the waves. The beauty of a cruise is that everything’s taken care of. You don’t have to think about meals, transport or logistics. So let yourself fully unwind. That’s when the magic of cruising really sinks in.

15. End your trip smoothly

The final morning can feel hectic, so plan ahead. I always settle my onboard account the day before, pack most of my things after dinner and keep just what I need overnight in a tote bag. This makes disembarkation calm and easy. You’ll walk off the ship refreshed, not frazzled, and ready to start planning the next one.

Final Thought

Your first cruise is the start of a new kind of travel. One where you unpack once, explore multiple destinations and enjoy resort-style service at sea. It’s unlike any other holiday.

Take these tips, relax and enjoy the experience. Before long, you’ll understand why so many of us fall in love with cruising and start counting down to the next sail away as soon as we’re home.
